They are found in almost every state, with the highest populations being in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio. The Yorkshire breed was developed in England in the county of York. Later the name was changed to “English Large White” but it is known as Yorkshire throughout most of the rest of the world. There are three types of hogs referred to as the Yorkshire: the large, the middle and the small types. Only the large type has ever gained any prominence in the United States.

As an Americanized version of the Large White pig, it is one of the most widespread breeds in the United States and one of the best farm animals for self sufficiency.

After it was brought to the United States in 1830, it didn’t become popular right away due to its slow growth rate. This was until the late 1940s when it started gaining in popularity.

The Yorkshire boars are large and powerful, weighing between 530 – 750 pounds. They’re Active, tough, and robust enough to adjust to a wide range of climatic conditions.

The average sow weighs around 500-550 pounds, but can reach up to 660 pounds. They’re excellent mothers with an average litter size of 13 piglets.
